GAP Program Tutoring: Preparing for 1st Year University

Student's Perspective

Taryn

"I had a wonderful time doing the Gap program with Professor Goldstein. I went into the program feeling nervous and unprepared for university and left feeling confident and with many tools under my belt. The program takes you through preparation for university in terms of expectations and goals, and segues into mock lectures and developing your own university-level project. Professor Goldstein did a wonderful job tailoring the program to my personal interests and curiosities. He is open, enthusiastic, encouraging, and very helpful, and you get a great sense of genuine enthusiam from him. I think much of the fear about university for first-year students is not knowing what to expect, and this program alleviated much of my fears. I feel very prepared and excited for my first year as a result!"

Parent's Perspective

Mary Beth

"As a homeschooling parent one of my roles was to seek out mentors/teachers that could help facilitate interest and learning of a given subject. This worked quite well, and introduced my daughter to different subjects she would not necessarily have looked at independently. She ended up attending high school for grades 10 through 12 and found the lack of proper mentorship was something she sadly missed. After a shortened final year due to COVID and a planned gap year, we felt it might be a good idea for her to get an introduction to the mindset of a successful student. This involved working with a mentor again, namely [Dr. Goldstein]. During our initial conversation with him, my daughter found that [Dr. Goldstein] listened to her interests and goals and worked to structure the content of the program around what she wanted to pursue. [Dr. Goldstein] was engaging and thoughtful, and fostered stimulating discussion and skills that would benefit her in first year, such as critical thinking, time management, and how to navigate relationships with professors. I highly recommend this program to future students to help prepare them for further education in a manner high school does not."
